Trim or remove trees and branches close to buildings or power lines that may fall in high winds to help prevent window and roof damage or fallen power lines.
Keep all paper files and electronic equipment of the floor and make sure power cords unplugged during storm to decrease the risk of water damage and short circuiting/electrical fires in the event of flooding.
Have a family plan to meet in a certain place if you are separated. Also pick a relative out of state for each family member to call and report they are safe
If you have to evacuate turn off your utilities ( Electric, Water & Gas).
Make sure you have a good supply of water. Also, you can fill up a bathtub of water to be used in toilets in homes with septic tanks so that you can flush without electricity
Invest in a weather radio or a small TV that runs on batteries. These were very handy when I did not have lights or water for four days. We were able to see what was going on around us especially when we have tornatic conditions
Make sure you purchase and have a few tarps handy for any roof damage.
Purchase several large containers of drinking water and foods that don't spoil.
Make sure you have candles ,flashlights and portable radio that work!
You can throw outside patio furniture in the pool so that it doesn't blow away (& gets clean too)
Wash out tubs good and fill with water & a touch of bleach (can be used for flushing toilets as well)
Freeze several large containers with water . . . Can be used to maintain frozen goods in icechests
Make sure plently of charcoal on hand or gas tanks are full.
Make sure all prescriptions are refilled in event you cannot drive.
